When I started researching the meaning of the peace sign I wasn’t surprised at what I found. The peace sign symbolizes universal peace and most of the articles I found refer to the fun lovin peace of the 70’s… To be expected ‘The 70’s show’ came up a fair bit in my internet searches, that was one of the first things that popped into my head when I thought about writing this… It was a very popular tv show for my generation a few years back.
There were a number of things I discovered when I went looking for the true meaning, a lot I didn’t know, here are the top 3 I thought were worth mentioning.
- It was created by British artist Gerald Holtom in 1958.
- It was originally designed as a symbol for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War.
- The three lines in the circle represent two letters – N and D, which stands for Nuclear Disarmament.
- The two lines on the bottom of the peace symbol which are at a 45 degree angle represent two flags held at this angle, which represents the letter “N.” The straight line in the middle that goes up and down represents the letter, “D.”
In the United States in 1960 the popularity of the symbol quickly spread and became a symbol of the peace movement. It was very popular during the Vietnam War and is now used as an internationally known symbol for peace amongst all people.
I hope you fond this as interesting as I did. Peace Out!
